Workshop 1

Dates: 31st March – 2nd April

Venue: Pearl Residence, Burdubai

A) Juniors (Age: 5 – 15 years)

Thursday – 31st March 2011: 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Friday – 1st April 2011: 10 am – 1 pm

Saturday – 2nd April 2011: 10 am – 1 pm

Programme: Temple to Courts

This workshop aims to educate and enlighten participants on the origin of the dance form of Kathak, its

historical roots and the movement of this art form from the Hindu Temple to the Moghul Courts and

beyond. This will enable each one of the participant to familiarize oneself with the dance form from a

technique and a choreography perspective. An exciting manifold of Kathak is witnessed in its most intensive

format. Innovative and Stylised techniques of this era is the focus in this workshop.

B) Seniors (Age: 16 + years)

Thursday – 31st March 2011: 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Friday – 1st April 2011: 1pm – 4 pm

Saturday – 2nd April 2011: 1pm – 4 pm

Programme: Courts to Contemporary

The courts and the temples gave rise to several different aspects of Kathak. Whilst temples showcasing its

mythological stories created an enriching and artistic outlook to Kathak, the court dance also shaped itself

into fine expressions and newer dimensions of the dance form. We work on the period when Mughal Kathak

moves towards Contemporary Kathak in the influence of the British Raaj. Extensive work on the technique

and choreography aspects are given emphasis

Workshop 2

Dates: 7th April – 9th April

Venue: Pearl Residence, Burdubai

Friday – 8th April 2011: 10 am – 1 pm

Saturday – 9th April 2011: 10 am – 1 pm

Programme: ‘Katha Kahey so Kathak’ – ‘One who tells a story is a Kathak’. In this workshop, we understand

and enlighten ourselves in the origin of Kathak as to story-telling in the melas of the villages. Folk culture in

its vibrant colours covering technical aspects of story-telling. This will be demonstrated through rhythmic

pattern of kathak movements. The narrative aspect of story-telling through Kavit, Krishna lores – Makhan

Chori, Panghat, Rasalila etc will be illustrated and performed.

B) Seniors (Age: 16 + years)

Saturday – 9th April 2011: 1pm – 4 pm

Programme : Sufiana Kathak

As Kathak progresses from temple to courts to contemporary and stylised forms of story-telling, a new

school of Kathak manifests. Combining the mysticism of Sufi tradition, ancient Kathak blends and merges

itself with Sufi Sangeet and verses, emphasizing on the mysticism through music. Fused with unique and

distinctive dance idioms and synchronized with Sufi music, Sufiana Kathak is meditative and mystical. The

workshop will enable a deeper understanding of the art of story-telling from a spiritual aspect enabling a

unision of the dance and the dancer.

And finally we will integrate all the aspects of Dancing Divas 2011 workshop as the basis for the

performance of one of the biggest Kathak festivals in Dubai, scheduled for June 2011, giving a chance to

our participants to showcase their talent on stage and preparing oneself for various choreographies.

You can choose to attend any one or a combination of workshops.

Fee per workshop: Aed 400/-

Combination of any two workshops: Aed 700/-

A short break of 15 minutes with refreshments will be provided.
