Dilshad Patel’s Dance / Movement Therapy Sessions for March 2010

Dance and Movement therapy class details
Welcome to Dilshad’s dance and movement therapy class. This fun-filled class takes you through an invigorating movement experience, stabilizing your core muscles and strengthening the body and mind from the ‘outside in’, by building self awareness and health through observation and correction of movement and posture. Dance and movement therapy along with relaxation techniques help you rediscover yourself through movement, removing stress to energize you. This one-of-a-kind class integrates structure through various styles of dance and encourages the mind and body connection through unstructured movement.

What is Dance/Movement therapy?
Dance therapy is the use of dance movements to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of a person. The dance therapist believes that the body and mind are connected, thus the state of the body may affect mental and emotional health. Dance therapists improve their clients’ wellbeing through this connection, observing movement to diagnose and prevent potential and existing health issues.

How is a movement therapy class different from a regular dance class?
Movement comes from the participants and is very different from a conventional dance class where choreographed movement is taught. Although some dance instructors call themselves therapists, dance instruction is in fact quite the opposite of what dance therapists would do in a session.
By getting people to express themselves through movement, dance therapy develops muscle co-ordination and mobility while improving self-awareness and interpersonal interaction. While dance therapists are responsible for preventive health by observing and altering movements, retraining muscles and diagnosing movement challenges, they also help solve various physical and psychological problems for those recovering from illness, or dealing with physical, emotional or mental challenges.

About Dilshad
As part of her training program at the Harkness Dance Centre in New York, Dilshad got an opportunity to observe and teach at various schools, colleges, psychiatric departments in hospitals and residential treatment centres for emotional and behavioural disorders. Dilshad was also awarded a scholarship to be part of a work-study program at the Garth Fagan Dance School in New York. Garth Fagan is famed for winning the Tony award for his choreography in the Broadway musical Lion King.
Dance has been an integral part of Dilshad’s life since the age of five. She trained in Bharat Natyam for 12 years, and was an instructor and performer with Shiamak Davar’s Institute for the performing Arts for 7 years.

While teaching dance to children infected with HIV, with hearing and visual impairments, and to orphans and juvenile delinquents, Dilshad learned about the challenges and rewards of counselling children with special needs. Wanting to do more with dance, movement and fitness, Dilshad moved to New York to pursue her education in the field of dance and movement therapy.
