Bhangra is the folk music and dance of the Punjab region of India, but it’s become hugely popular in dance clubs around the world. Rekha Malhotra, who performs and records under the name DJ Rekha, is seen by some as a roving ambassador for the music. She’s been throwing and DJing a party called Basement Bhangra at a New York City club for a decade, but she’s just now putting out her first CD: DJ Rekha Presents Basement Bhangra.

The party, at a club called S.O.B.’s, is about the dance moves unique to the music as well as the music itself. It starts early, and there’s always a free dance lesson at the beginning. The crowd is diverse, including people of South Asian descent, people with an interest in South Asian culture, and people just looking to party.

DJ Rekha says she doesn’t prepare for her weekly gig. “I never know what’s going to happen because I’m always just trying to respond to the crowd,” she says. Making an album was different, though, and it took her a long time.

Many people only know one Bhangra song: Panjabi MC’s “Mundian to Back Ke” (“Beware of the Boys”), which was already a huge international hit in 2003 when Jay-Z rhymed over a remix. DJ Rekha says that the success of the remix created a sense of urgency in a lot of bhangra artists about the need to collaborate with hip-hop MCs.

She herself doesn’t rule out collaborating with hip-hop artists. In fact, an introduction and a short rhyme from Wyclef Jean opens her record. “My goal is to just make my music reach as many people as possible,” she says. “So if that means crossing over, then it does. But it’s about finding an audience that appreciates it.”

The first track, called “Basement Bhangra Anthem,” is aptly titled. Like most Bhangra songs, it features the dhol — a two-sided drum that functions as the percussive heart of the music.

A group called Tigerstyle produced “Aaja Nachiye Boliyan Paiye.” Brothers Raj and Pops are Sikhs from Glasgow, and they’ve been influential in the Bhangra scene for almost 10 years.

One of the first to mix bhangra and hip-hop was Bally Sagoo, who produced the track that closes out Basement Bhangra: “Gur Nalon Ishq Mitha.” The song was produced in 1990, but it still works on a dance floor today. DJ Rekha often plays it at the end of her party because it’s long and it builds. She says she’s played it everywhere, in every context.

DJ Rekha says her record isn’t a carbon copy of what she’d play at one of her shows. Basement Bhangra does feature artists who’ve performed at her parties over the years, but the songs on the CD are much shorter than what she could play in a room full of people dancing. Still, she says she set out to make a dance CD, not a world-music CD. The term “world music” strikes her as too anthropological and voyeuristic, she says, but dance music is something anyone can throw on and move to.

Celia Cruz was one of the most respected vocalists of Latin music. One of fourteen children, she was born in little Barrio Santra Suarez, Havana. Her first pair of shoes was given to her by a tourist she sang for. Besides spending many nights singing her brothers and sisters to sleep, Cruz sang at school concerts and at community gatherings. Taken to cabarets and nightclubs by an uncle, she was introduced to the world of professional music. A cousin talked her into entering a young talent show, which she won. Although her father tried guiding her towards a teaching career, she continued to be tempted by music. In a 1997 interview she said: “I have granted my father’s wish of my being a teacher: through my music I teach generations of people about my culture and the joy one can get out of simply living life. As a singer, I want people to feel their hearts sing and their spirits fly! After signing up at the Cuban Music Conservatory in 1947, Cruz found her earliest inspiration in the song of Afro-Cuban vocalist Paulina Alvarez. Her first big break came when she was invited by the band La Sonora Matancera in 1950. At that time, the group was considered to be the equivalent of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Cruz continued singing with the group for the next fifteen years, touring the world. She married the band’s trumpeter, Pedro Knight, on July 14, 1962. After the triumph of the Cuban revolution in 1959, Cruz and Knight refused to return to their country and became American citizens. Although they initially signed on with the Hollywood Palladium orchestra, Cruz and Knight settled in New York. Knight became Cruz’s agent in 1965, a position he had until the 90’s, when he began paying more attention to his work as musical director and conductor of Cruz’s band. Shortly after leaving Sonora Matancera in 1965, Celia launched her solo career with a band formed by herself along with Tito Puente. Despite having made eight records together, their work together had no commercial success. Cruz and Puente got together again on the stage for a special appearance at the Grammy Awards presentation in 1987. After signing with Vaya, Fania’s sister label, Cruz recorded with Oscar D’León, Cheo Feliciano and Héctor Rodríguez in the mid and late sixties. Cruz’s first hit after leaving Sonora Matancera came in 1974 when she recorded an album duet, Celia and Johnny, with Johnny Pacheco, trombonist and co owner of Fania. She then began appearing with the Fania All Stars. Cruz’s popularity reached its highest peak when she appeared in the 1992 movie, “Los Reyes del Mambo”. Cruz also appeared on the movie, “La familia Pérez”, and sang a version of “Loco de Amor” for the duet with David Byrne in Jonathan Demme’s movie, Totalmente Salvaje (Something Wild). In 1998, Cruz made Duets, an album in which her songs with Willie Colon, Angela Carrasco, Oscar D’León, Jose Alberto “El Canario” and La India stand out. Cruz continued recording and performing until she was attacked by a brain tumor in 2002. While recovering form the operation which had removed the tumor, she managed to record “Regalo de Alma” in the studios in early 2003. Her operation was only partly successful and Celia Cruz died on July 16, 2003. The death of the “Queen of Salsa” left a great void in the music world. But also a notable curriculum with which to document her reign. At IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0190272/ At Wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celia_Cruz Her work:

This year sees a resurgence in salsa king Hector Lavoe’s popularity as the much anticipated biopic of the Latin legend, El Cantante, starring Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony prepares to hit the silver screen. Fania Records has prepared a new compilation of classic Hector Lavoe material in celebration of the occasion, entitled The El Cantante: The Originals. The album contains 13 newly re-mastered classics all featured in the Hector Lavoe film, as well as an exclusive remix of “Mi Gente” by Lavoe’s nephew, DJ Louie Vega [Masters at Work] and is set for release on July 17th. iTunes users can download the album one week ahead of time starting the week of July 10th.

Hector Lavoe’s brilliant voice and incomparable panache made him the ultimate icon of Latin cool and earned him the name “El Cantante” (The Singer) to generations worldwide. Often referred to as the “Latin Frank Sinatra,” Lavoe captured the essence of what came to be known as the Fania sound and dominated the salsa world for over three decades. His life story is full of dazzling heights and tragic lows. Shortly after meeting New York City trombonist, Willie Colon, the two instantly became a successful duo and produced hits such as “Che Che Cole” and “La Murga.” Lavoe went solo after releasing 10 albums with Colon, transforming the look and feel of Latin music with his signature “salsa dura” (hard salsa) sound. Hits such as “Mi Gente” have evolved to symbolize Latin power.
